Residents of Kete Krachi in the Oti Region have renewed calls on government authorities to urgently construct a modern mini-port on the Volta Lake, following another disturbing accident involving a cargo truck that capsized near the lake shore.
The latest incident, which narrowly avoided casualties, has heightened fears among residents and transport operators about the poor state of docking facilities and weak safety infrastructure along the lake.

Speaking to News Volta, residents stressed that the absence of a proper port facility continues to expose passengers, traders, and transporters to serious safety risks, particularly during loading and offloading of goods and vehicles.
“It is long overdue for government to build a proper mini-port here. We keep witnessing accidents, and one day we may record massive casualties if urgent steps are not taken,” a community leader lamented.
They argued that state-led construction of a standard port would significantly improve safety, efficiency, trade, and transport operations on the Volta Lake, while boosting economic activity in the enclave.
According to them, a well-designed lake port would ensure:

- Safer loading and offloading of vehicles and cargo
- Reduced risk of accidents and capsizing
- Improved passenger safety
- Faster movement of goods
- Enhanced economic growth for lakeside communities
Transport operators and traders also echoed the call, urging authorities to treat the project as a national safety and development priority.
“This lake serves thousands of people daily. Government involvement is crucial. A mini-port is no longer a luxury — it is a necessity,” a commercial driver noted.
Residents are therefore appealing to the Ministry of Transport, Volta Lake Transport Company, and relevant state agencies to prioritise the construction of a modern port facility in Kete Krachi to safeguard lives and promote sustainable lake transport.
