The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South, Hon. Nicholas Worclachie , has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to sanitation improvement and environmental protection, according to a video statement sighted by News Volta.
In the video, the MCE disclosed that preparatory works are actively underway to operationalise a new landfill site for the municipality, including the creation of access roads linking the site through Nogokpo, Lotakor, and Amedzikorpe to facilitate efficient waste evacuation from communities across Ketu South.
He revealed that the Assembly has successfully acquired about 20 acres of land for the project, describing it as a major milestone in resolving the municipality’s long-standing sanitation challenges.
Dekeme Borla Evacuation a Top Priority
Hon. Worklachie stated that evacuating the Dekeme waste site, popularly known as Dekeme Borla in Aflao, remains the topmost priority once the new landfill becomes operational.
“With this new site secured, our immediate focus is the long-awaited evacuation of the Dekeme Borla to restore sanitation, public health, and environmental dignity to Aflao and its surrounding communities,” he said.
For many years, residents and business operators have expressed concerns over the serious health risks, environmental pollution, and social discomfort associated with the Dekeme waste site, making its evacuation a critical intervention.
The MCE Worclachie, explained that the new landfill project would significantly improve sanitation standards, reduce disease outbreaks, and protect the environment.
He stressed that modern waste management is central to public health promotion, environmental sustainability, and urban development, particularly for Aflao, which serves as Ghana’s eastern gateway to Togo and the sub-region.
Hon. Worklachie assured residents that every fund earmarked for sanitation would be used strictly for its intended purpose, emphasizing accountability, transparency, and efficiency in public spending.
“Every fund allocated for sanitation will be strictly applied to sanitation projects. We are committed to delivering results for our people,” he assured.
He further noted that the initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s national vision of promoting a clean Ghana, and pledged his full commitment to implementing national sanitation policies at the local level.
