Security has been tightened in Ehi, in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region, following a swift joint police–military operation that led to the arrest of 191 individuals in connection with last week’s violent unrest that targeted the local police post.
The disturbances erupted after the arrest of a suspect accused of murdering a fellow youth in the community — a tragic incident that sparked outrage and mob action, resulting in property damage and heightened tension in the area.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the large-scale operation was launched to restore calm and reassert state authority after mobs besieged the police post in an attempt to force the release of the murder suspect. The joint task force moved in decisively to prevent further escalation and maintain public order.
Police sources confirmed that all 191 arrested persons are currently undergoing screening and profiling to determine their level of involvement in the November 5 violence. Those found culpable will face prosecution, while others will be released after investigation.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that peace is restored in Ehi and surrounding communities,” a police statement said. “We caution the public against acts that undermine the authority of security agencies.”
Community leaders have since appealed for calm, urging residents to cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue. The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has also been briefed on the situation, with assurances of a sustained security presence in the area to deter further unrest.
Residents who spoke to News Volta expressed mixed emotions — some fearful about the heavy security operation, others relieved that calm has finally returned after days of tension.
“We just want peace,” said one local trader. “No one wants to live in fear again. The violence must stop.”
The incident has reignited discussions about the need for stronger community policing, early conflict detection, and youth engagement strategies to prevent localized violence from spiraling into broader instability.
