Residents of the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region have once again voiced their anger and frustration over what they describe as unacceptable and exploitative billing practices by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Denu.
At a heated stakeholder engagement held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the residents, led by Mr. Edem Vigloh-Mensah, a youth activist and community advocate, accused the ECG of issuing outrageous and inaccurate electricity bills that have left many families and businesses in distress.
Mr. Vigloh explained that the core issue stems from discrepancies between meter readings and billed amounts. Despite meters being installed to accurately capture consumption, customers are still receiving inflated bills—a situation residents claim has now moved from estimated to “actual usage” billing, yet remains unreflective of their true power consumption.
Tensions heightened when an electricity account (Meter No. 0231534651, Account No. 723590368) with an ECG bill showing GH₵59,742.35 in arrears was cross-checked by the Energy Commission’s billing application, revealing the actual amount owed to be around GH₵14,000.00—a staggering difference of GH₵45,742.00. The revelation sparked outrage among residents, who accused ECG officials at Denu of gross irregularities and deliberate overbilling.
The ECG Consumers Group in Ketu South called for an independent audit of all meters in the municipality to ensure fairness and transparency. They further appealed for the deployment of qualified, ethical, and God-fearing IT engineers at the Denu ECG office to restore public trust.
The engagement, jointly organized by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Energy Commission, and ECG, served as a platform for affected consumers to air their grievances and seek redress. Residents were urged to submit documented evidence of billing or service discrepancies for further investigation.
The people of Ketu South say they will not relent until ECG restores accountability, fairness, and justice in power billing across the municipality.
