Volta Region has once again demonstrated its strategic relevance to Ghana’s national development as the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, together with the Council of State member for the region, Gabriel Kwamega Atokple Tanko, heads of key state institutions, members of the clergy, and the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, undertook an extensive inspection of government’s ongoing ‘Big Push’ infrastructure projects.
Covering over 348 kilometres of road works—including the construction of a 67.5-metre steel bridge at Sayikope (North Tongu District)—the tour was aimed at assessing progress, interacting with contractors, and addressing concerns of communities along the routes. The move highlights the region’s commitment to ensuring accountability, quality, and timely delivery as the Volta Region takes its rightful share in Ghana’s development drive.
A Strategic Corridor for National and Regional Trade
Briefing the delegation during the tour, the Volta Regional Maintenance Manager of the Ghana Highways Authority, Eng. Samuel Yaw, emphasised the strategic importance of the ongoing works, particularly the rehabilitation of key sections of the N2 highway, Ghana’s vital trade corridor linking the Tema Port to Burkina Faso.
He noted that the completion of the Asikuma–Anyirawase–Ho–Denu stretch will transform transportation and trade logistics:
Travel time will reduce by an estimated 40%
Transportation costs will significantly drop
Economic activities across the Volta Region and the northern corridor will strengthen
According to him, the Asikuma–Have–Hohoe portion—originally under Cocobod funding—has now been integrated into the Big Push programme, guaranteeing accelerated work and improved resource allocation.
Boosting Local Economies & National Growth
Eng. Yaw assured that the Ghana Highways Authority continues to enforce strict quality standards in materials and road safety protocols, ensuring that the investment translates into long-term value for Ghanaians.
He praised the contractors handling the Asikuma to Adidome and Kpetoe to Denu stretches for their efficiency, describing their work as “highly impressive,” while acknowledging delays on the Hohoe–Have section—an issue the team pledged to address.
Representing the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Torgbega Sei II of the Botoku Traditional Area shared similar sentiments, commending the overall progress while urging quicker action where delays persist.
Ensuring Accountability, Safety & Community Support
Regional Minister James Gunu reaffirmed that continuous monitoring is a core responsibility of the VRCC and will be conducted every six months.
He encouraged contractors to increase their pace of work, maintain clear communication channels, and adhere strictly to safety and technical standards due to the economic relevance of the projects.
He further appealed to communities to discontinue the practice of constructing unauthorised speed bumps, urging patience as temporary discomfort is expected whenever major infrastructure is underway.
A Region Rising—Sea Defence, Port Development & Coastal Resilience
The tour concluded at the Agavedzi Sea Defence Project, where the Regional Minister met the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, also on an inspection visit.
Both ministers proceeded to assess ongoing works at the Keta Port Project Site, signalling government’s determination to enhance coastal protection, port infrastructure, and economic growth in the Volta Region.
Volta Region — Actively Claiming Its Share of Ghana’s National Cake
From roads and bridges to sea defence and port development, the Volta Region is undergoing a major transformation.
The Big Push initiative is not just improving infrastructure—it is unlocking the region’s potential as:
a robust trade corridor,
a tourism and logistics hub,
a contributor to national GDP,
and a key player in Ghana’s long-term economic vision.
The inspection reinforces a clear message: the Volta Region is rising, and it is taking its rightful place in Ghana’s national development story.
